My Teaching Philosophy

Professional Knowledge

The foundation of my teaching philosophy is that as teachers, we have the power, responsibility and privilege to ensure all students’ diverse learning needs are catered for and all learners are provided with “rigorous, relevant and engaging learning programs” (ACARA, n.d, para 2). I believe that learning should be student focused, engaging and guiding learners through interactive, relevant and holistic learning experiences to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. As an enthusiastic and passionate beginning teacher I strive to continuously engage in professional development opportunities to enhance and better my teaching knowledge and pedagogy.

Professional Practice

My pedagogical philosophy involves creating an inclusive learning environment through building relationships with all my students to understand their unique learning styles and needs. Only through knowing my students can I then successfully “develop each child’s personality and talents to the full” (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, 1996). Additionally, my teaching style emphasises the importance of social learning through using strategies including think-pair-share and cooperative learning groups where students can exchange ideas and develop new insights from each other whereby “children at different levels… can help each other learn” (Slavin, 2006, p. 47). According to Canter (2010), part of creating a safe and positive learning environment is having consistent high expectations of all students and using effective behaviour management strategies to reinforce positive behaviour, whereby I like to have class dojo’s in my classroom where students get rewarded for good behaviour and earn points to claim prizes.

Professional Engagement

Keeping up to date with the latest teaching strategies and resources, and continuously sourcing for new teaching ideas is also a major aspect of my teaching philosophy. Being an active member on social media through a community of teachers on Twitter has opened me up to an extensive supply of teaching ideas, activities and resources. Through this community I strive to continue sharing and exchanging ideas with other teachers, keeping each other up to date with the latest and greatest of the teaching world.
